A. Enroll in acting class. Good actors study their entire lives. To choose a good class, ask trusted, successful professionals for references. Get a headshots ( pictures) Compose a resume of all the work you have done so far. As your body of work grows, drop the less professional work (such as school plays) from your resume. Send your headshot and resume with a brief cover letter to all the casting directors and agents in your area. Follow up with postcards every four to six months, updating them on your current acting projects. Read the trade papers regularly: "Backstage," "Dramalogue," "The Ross Reports" and "Variety," as well as online publications , as appropriate. Know what is being cast where, and… [cont.]

I`m a singer. How do I get into "the biz"?
Q. Hi, I`m an aspiring singer/songwriter. I`m at the moment very good. (In the opinions of random people who have heard me and music teachers.) And my songs are typically liked by people and I`m working on them. At the moment I`m looking into getting singing lesons so I may widen my horizon. Also, I`m trying to figure out an instrument to master (or atleast learn to play,) so I can not only be able to sing/write the lyircs but also make the music to it. And hopefully that will make me more appealing to others. Is there anything else I can do? Please tell me. I dont want to fail at my dream. And lastly please dont tell me "It is a dream of many, reality of few." That is what I say to others so I already know it. Thank you in advance.… [cont.]

Do you think I can make it in the "music biz"?
Q. Am I what managers, talent scouts, and etc., look for in something new.

A. I think you definitely have potential. It's all about who you know. It's not easy to break in to the business, but maybe if you get yourself out there (youtube is a great place to start) you just never know who will respond. I've heard of people getting discovered working at Coldstone Creamery!!! Just keep putting your name and voice out there, and hopefully something will become of it! :) You may want to work on strengthening your upper register :) Stretch that pretty voice! :) However, some of that also will come with age when your voice matures! Best of luck to you! :)

A. Don't work online. Even if it's legit, it's still a huge hassle. My 16 year old daughter got a summer job at a snowball stand. I think she had a friend who worked there at 14. There are plenty of things a 13 year old could do. If you are in a neighborhood then all you have to do is create a flyer and pass them out. It's illegal to put them in mailboxes, but you can roll them up and put them between the front doorknob and door casing. Tell them that you will do any little odd job like pulling weeds, washing cars, walking dogs, light housekeeping, babysitting. A lot of people will give you a little odd job just because you are being a go-getter and they want to help, not necessarily because they need the job done.

Is saying "none of your biz" considered rude?
Q. I had a lil fight with a very good friend of mine... 'cause I asked her a work-related question which turned out to be too personal to her. I didn't realize it soon enough. She kept asking "why you wanna know?" And I said, "just making conversation." It ended up with her saying "it's none of your biz" over and over, after which I left the messenger and told her she's being unreasonably harsh to me. Do you guys ever use that expression? To me... it's plain-rude. If someone asks a question that's too personal, I just say "eeeh, let's not go there" or something else. I'd never say "it's none of your biz" unless the person isn't a friend, but a coworker or a friend of a friend and keeps asking… [cont.]

A. Pretty much what Nurse Susan said. By your own account, you kept asking this person the same question and she kept deflecting you. Newsflash: if you ask someone a question ONCE and they give you an evasive answer, you have your answer: they don't want to talk about it. This is all about boundaries and how they work. People are entitled to set personal boundaries: to decide for themselves what kinds of questions they will answer and where they maintain privacy. If someone disrespects those boundaries, most people are going to react defensively-- like saying, "that's none of your biz!" Basically, when a person turns from polite brush-offs to a question to a full-on snarl of "that's none of your biz!", they're telling you… [cont.]

Best Place to Live in LA and in "The Biz"?
Q. Hi, I'm relocating to LA from SF. I want to make the best choice for a 1 bedroom apartment. I don't want to be stuck commuting too much, so a central location is best. A few frills are nice too. I am a Film and TV Editor, so I believe the best choices for post-production are found in Santa Monica, the Burbank area or Hollywood. I'm not much of a beach guy, more of a nightlife person, I guess. So would the Hollywood Area (Beachwood Cyn, Los Feliz, Silverlake, Echo Park) be best? Or should I go for something like Studio City, Sherman Oaks, No Ho or Burbank? Santa Monica and We Ho seem a bit out of my price range. A Downtown LA Loft would be cool, but I fear the hassle. Seems like you can get way more bang for the buck in the southern part of… [cont.]

A. I lived in So Cal for almost 20 years and your price range doesn't correlate with what you want. You can find something in Hollywood area but do you really want that. Have you been to L.A. yet? The east-west streets are price barometers. Sunset is most north followed by Santa Monica -Beverly - Wilshire - Olympic and Pico Blvd being most south. South of Pico is a helluva lot cheaper than north of Sunset. The north-south streets work like the east-west streets. West of Centinela is way better and more expensive than east of Western. Silverlake and Los Feliz are better than most areas. Once you're 'over the hill' you have to realize how much traffic you'll be sitting in. The canyon shortcuts are no longer shortcuts. The 101 and the 405 are… [cont.]

A. I am sorry about your illness. If this is your business, and your equipment, you can simply fire the artist and get the police to tell him to leave. Get his keys to the shop and change the locks if needed. If you don't want to be that confrontational, find out if he wants to buy the business from you and take over the lease. If he does, then get an experienced attorney or business sale realtor (they exist) to help you negotiate terms. If you are merely trying to end the lease, and don't want to do something like a business sale, then notify the landlord via certified letter that you are ending your business on x date and want your security deposit back, and that artist "a" would like to negotiate a lease with him.
